Writing Update Aug. 7, 2009

So many amazing things have happened to me over the past few years, that when I was given the invitation to submit an essay about what was important to me, I jumped on it.

The “This I Believe” organization has published my essay entitled “From Ordinary to Extraordinary” and it’s now online. I guess they’ve had a lot of trouble with their website, because they notified me in June that my essay was published and I was only able to find it recently.

As far as progress for my book, I have finally finished what I hope to be the last really major revision (of my own doing, that is). In between work and family, it has taken me more than 10 weeks to complete. I’m giving the manuscript to my editor next week and we shall see what transpires after that. This time I really feel DONE though. I’m feeling really good about it, although I know it’s waaaay too long—100,000 words and needs to be cut back. That’s where the expertise of someone who’s objective comes in; one tends to become rather fond of one’s own words sometimes!

So please stay tuned. I have a lot of posts in the works and ready to add to my blog; I’ve just been working like mad trying to finish my book.

A Gift Of Love: Deepak & Friends Present Music Inspired By The Love Poems Of RumiApril 23, 2009

It never ceases to amaze me how things have fallen into place since my mystical experience at Sammy Hagar’s concert in 2003. I take one step and the next already seems laid out for me. I can hardly not stay on this path. It’s as if the Universe has dictated its certainty since longer than the concept of time.

Last December, I happened upon this CD–selected writings of Rumi read aloud by celebrities such as Madonna, Deepak Chopra, Blythe Danner, Demi Moore, Goldie Hawn, Debra Winger and others. Rumi was a 13th century poet, Sufi and mystic who composed over 30,000 amazing verses.

As I listened to the online sample of this album, I heard Demi Moore’s beautiful voice reading one of Rumi’s poems, “Do You Love Me?”

The words took my breath away. My intellectual mind told me that the poems were written by a man for his lover, but when I listened, the words perfectly described the mystical experience I’d had years earlier. They sounded like something I wish I would have written to illustrate the connection with God I’d felt so fully.

Where does God end and lover begin?

God does not end. God is the ultimate lover, as my experience was the ultimate high. I saw profoundly in that moment, that love, lover and Beloved are one.

God is a constant that permeates and comprises each grain of sand, each human being and each note of music.

In the following video, Jared Harris reads Rumi’s poem “Looking for Your Face.” It is the best example I can give you of how I felt during my soul’s revelation one hot night in Mexico; my entire being floating in the ecstasy of discovering my truth in the “face” of God:

JUST LISTEN TO IT!

A lot of amazing things have happened to me over the past few years–supernatural and mystical experiences. Many of the events involved concepts I wasn’t quite sure I believed in until they actually occurred in my life. They were so strange and wonderful that I wrote a book about them. Since much of what happened has to do with music–Sammy Hagar’s music to be exact, I will start there. Thank you for listening.

If it makes you happy, do more of it.

Music transports us to a place where words cannot go. It lifts our spirits, takes us on a ride—of fantasy or magnified reality.

It gives a name to the darkness of our pain, wings to the exuberance of our joy. It validates feelings we may not know how to articulate. It draws upon these emotions and by the very act of sharing, it renews our souls.

But music is more than a portrait of life. I think music is a separate entity with a “body” and “mind” of its own. This new creation comes to life through the performance of the vocals, the instruments, the lyrics, the notes and through the passion of the musicians as it merges with the personal experience of each listener.

Live music is even more powerful. When our favorite band or singer takes the stage, the outside world seems to stop. We forget our troubles. We are transported to another world.

And we can take that feeling wherever we choose to take it. We can leave it in the auditorium after the show, forget about it after we turn off the CD player, or we can absorb its energy into our hearts and use its influence as an inspiration for finding meaning in our lives.

What is a Mystical Experience?

What is the meaning of my life?
Is there really such a thing as God?

If you find yourself asking these questions, you’re not alone. I’ve wondered the same things all my life. In 2003, I found the answers; not by looking for them but through a mystical experience that sought me.

According to merriam-webster, the term mysticism means “the experience of mystical union or direct communion with ultimate reality.” It refers to an incident of connection to God, the Divine Source, the Most High or whatever term one feels comfortable calling It, accompanied by a feeling of inner peace and unimaginable bliss. It’s as if the experience itself has been orchestrated by a higher intelligence, something separate, yet inextricably entwined with one’s deepest sense of Being.

From a psychological standpoint, in “Body Mind Spirit,” K. Ramakrishna Rao describes it thus:

“Religious experience, the mystic experience, the peak experience, and all paranormal experiences may have one thing in common. They are the encounters with consciousness as such, pure consciousness in which there is no subject-object distinction … but a transformational process that often results in remarkable behavioral changes and beliefs and sometimes translates itself into informational content.”

How can I explain it so that you too, can know? I can’t, but I can give you a taste:

Have you ever felt the wonder of gazing at the stars on a warm summer night and thought about all the people over eons of time who might also have witnessed them?

Have you considered that the concept of time may be nothing but illusion or had the feeling that you’ve been here before?

Have you relished the sensation of freedom when taking off your shoes and socks and burrowing your bare feet into powdery, warm sand?

Have you known a sense of smallness as you stood at the base of a mighty glacier and questioned what a responsibility it would be to be a glacier? Or pondered what the  glacier knew that you didn’t?

Have you ever strained your ears to hear the messages these things have been trying to tell you?

These are the flavors of mystical experience.

Have you appreciated the tiny eyelashes of a newborn baby or felt the fragile hand of an elderly person with its paper-thin skin, blue veins rising just below the surface? Knowing your grip could easily crush that frail hand, your instinct instantly acts to protect something so tender and vulnerable.

Have you ever fallen so deeply into art where you are no longer conscious of where your identity ends and the identity of the artist and the work itself begins?

These moments are the first steps on the path to mystical experience.

Similar to a Near-Death Experience?

It’s Eastertime. This morning MSN had teasers online for articles dealing with the resurrection of Jesus which of course, begs the questions of reincarnation, the existence of heaven, and people’s accounts of near-death experiences (NDEs). The MSN article can be found here: NDEs.

As I read this, I realized that what happened to me during Sammy Hagar’s concert in 2003 and in subsequent experiences since that time, were similar to what many people describe in their NDEs. (I explore this briefly in my book, DANCE OF THE ELECTRIC HUMMINGBIRD.) I wonder why our encounters appear to have so much in common.

During my experience, I was engulfed in an intense light and literally became part of a tremendous, all-encompassing love. I knew instantly, that I was in the presence of the Ultimate Truth. I also saw ethereal beings of light on more than one occasion.

Perhaps I was put into that same dimension of consciousness that people describe when experiencing an NDE, that realm from which everything springs forth—every possibility, be it the formation of someone’s (anyone’s) thought, the inception of whatever it takes for a blade of grass to decide it’s time to poke through the soil and start living again after a long winter, or the fact that I am here at my desk typing these words on my computer.

I entered that realm of Source—the Divine Source of everything, and was reborn—into an understanding of what life is supposed to be. I think God gives us clues of this everyday; all we have to do is look around us: a caterpillar builds a cocoon, later to emerge as a butterfly, and autumn ultimately gives way to spring.

Confucius said: “Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.”

Mysticism, Music and Ordinary People

When I first began to write about the strange and wonderful experience that took place in my life nearly seven years ago, I had no idea that such things happened to ordinary people.

But as my volumes of notes began to amass about the mystical events that were occurring in my life on a daily basis, I wondered if anyone else had ever had a similar experience.

As far as I could tell, no one had.

I was confused, frightened and starting to entertain the notion that I just might be losing my mind.

As I neared completion of the writing of DANCE OF THE ELECTRIC HUMMINGBIRD (previews coming soon), I came across a few others who, although their experiences were somewhat different, were also precipitated by famous musicians and contained an element of the same mystical gene as my experience—something inexplicable, spiritual and wonderful—something the world needed to hear about because, if these things were happening to some of us, perhaps they were happening to many more of us. And maybe if a few of us were bold enough to share our stories, it might give others the courage to come forward as well.

Is it possible that something somewhere or someone was trying to tell us something through music? Music is a universal language that transcends words, perhaps providing a bridge to the world of spirit and other worlds we sense the existence of but can’t prove.

Over the coming months, I’d like to introduce you to several people who have had mystical awakenings similar to mine through music and famous rock musicians. Although our experiences are eerily similar, especially given that these incidents opened our eyes to our individual truths, each of us has explored a slightly different path because of what happened. These people are ordinary people like you and me. Ordinary people who, while going about their daily routines, suddenly became struck with something profound and wonderful that they never saw coming.
